Scammers in digital world

- writtern by : Mohan Lal Lothiya

I am writing this not to scare you, but just to make you aware. In this world of digital currency, our money is never safe. There are scammers all around and mind you, these scammers are evolving gradually. If you think, nothing will happen with you or your loved one, I am sorry to say, you are sadly mistaken. The greatest problem with millenials and GenZ is that each and every individual thinks that they are the smartest. It would always be better for you to think and believe that these thieves are way smarter than you. Register this in your subconscious mind, this will always keep you on your toes and will keep you aware. So, this happened with a girl who recently joined my team. She has an experience of around 3 years and gets around 48k in hand every month. She received a text message saying 15k has been deducted from her account. She got puzzled and called her mother who lives in Gwalior to check if she made any transaction. Her mother confirmed she didn't make any transaction. The message had a link and it read like, 'For details, click here' and there was a hyperlink on the word 'here'. She clicked on that hyperlink and she was directed to a page where she had was asked to enter her aadhar number. On entering that, she received an OTP. That poor girl, totally unaware of the consequences, entered the OTP and within seconds, an amount of 5.27 lacs got wiped off her account making her account's balance 0. She received a message informing about this deduction which shocked her to the core. She immediately checked her bank account by logging into her account via internet banking. To her horror, there was a transaction which confirmed a deduction of 5.27 lacs, but, there was no transaction for that deduction of 15k. That was when she realized that she has been scammed. This happened the past Friday and she informed this to us on Monday. We totally lost it on her and asked her how can she be so gullible in 2025, isn't she aware of such scams. We scolded her asking why didn't she check her bank account to confirm whether 15k has actually been deducted from her account. Had she done that, she would have understood that the message was a hoax. All we could offer her was just pity. She called the bank informing them about her loss, to which the bank blatantly replied that if any transaction happens which was authorized or approved by you through an OTP, then the bank can't help. She showed us that message of that deduction of 15k. She also logged into her account in front of us and showed us that deduction of 5.27 lacs on the mini statement in her internet banking account. This girl has a younger sister who's currently in college pursuing B.Com. Her father had a mild brain stroke a few years back after which he's not been working and has been surviving on medicines. Her family lives in a rented house in Gwalior and she herself lives on rent in a PG here in Pune. This incident gave us shivers down the spine. By God's grace, I have sufficient money and I felt obliged to offer some help. I transferred an amount of 50k to her account. She literally had tears in her eyes while thanking me and said that she would try to return it back ASAP. I gave her a graceful warning and told her that it's not needed. We are trying to console her and asking her to move on, but she's still traumatized. I narrated this entire incident to my family members and gave them a stern warning asking them never to click on any such link, never to enter their aadhar or any such details anywhere and never to enter any OTP on any suspicious site. I didn't inform anyone that I have helped that girl by sending her 50k. My younger brother said that only fools can fall in such a trap. He used the C word to address such victims. I shouted at him and scolded him saying that he's the biggest C if this his ideology. This made me realize how oversmart our generation of millenials and GenZ is. Almost everyone thinks that such an incident won't happen with them and they are smart enough to understand such traps. However, trust me folks, these scammers are way smarter, they have no shame and no conscience. Somewhere down the line, they will surely pay for their sins and maybe, then they would be able to recall their wrong doings, but, the damage has already been done to the victims. Stay safe buddies, stay aware and make everyone around you aware. Some victims may get scammed off a few thousands, some may lose a few lacs while some may even get ripped off. Your money is your family's daily bread. Losing it may impact your and your family's survival. As I said at the beginning, register this into your subconscious, "Scammers and thieves are way smarter and way more intelligent than us". This will keep you on your toes and will keep you aware.
